American Planning Association is seeking a tenacious and innovative contract marketing freelancer to work with APA staff, and our creative agency, on our upcoming National Planning Conference. NPC22 will be hybrid for the first time ever, with a conference in San Diego and an online version shortly thereafter.

We need a conference marketing guru – to work as an “extension of the team,” beginning in January, through the end of May. Hours will start smaller and escalate as we get closer to the event. This could also be a recurring job with potential opportunities for expansion, with our National Planning Conference and other events happening each year.

Today’s landscape for event marketing requires fresh, new, “creative creative” and strategic thinking that adapts to a new environment where engagement is key. From marketing strategy and outreach to registration sales and onsite presence, you’ll lead critical deliverables, guide attendee experience, and draft some copy while finessing copy too. If you are someone with creativity, focus, and a mind for digital and in-person both, open to freelance or even permalance, to paint the picture of what to expect for attendees, thinking differently, and leaning into experience more than ever before, this is for you.

In this role, you’ll have a chance to work independently, lead initiatives, and be part of a great team. No urban planning experience needed – if you like cities, small towns, and amazing communities, you’ll fit right in. The NPC21 conference content is diverse; the attendees are fun. The culture and staff at APA are savvy and polished while also casual, curious, and eager to hear new ideas. You’d be joining an innovative group, working together to accomplish a goal – in this case, the goal of new first-ever and best-yet hybrid NPC conference experience!
